'Ghosts of the Abyss' set to Break new Boundaries

Walt Disney Pictures is set to release James Cameron's groundbreaking new motion picture, "Ghosts of the Abyss," a film that sets a new filmmaking standard in both how it was produced and how the studio will support its distribution, it was announced (March/13) by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. His first film since the Academy Award®-winner and box office record-setter "Titanic," Cameron changes the way moviegoers will look at film with "Ghosts of the Abyss," a 3D film experience presented in both IMAX® Theaters and specially refitted 35mm theaters nationwide. The film chronicles a 2 1/2 mile expedition below the surface of the ocean to the final resting place of Titanic.
Academy Award®-winning director and master storyteller James Cameron journeys back to the site of his greatest inspiration -- the legendary wreck of the Titanic. With a team of the world's foremost historic and marine experts and friend Bill Paxton, he embarks on an unscripted adventure back to the final grave where nearly 1,500 souls lost their lives almost a century ago. Using state-of-the-art technology developed expressly for this expedition, Cameron and his crew are able to explore virtually all of the wreckage, inside and out, as never before. With the most advanced 3D photography, moviegoers will experience the ship as if they are part of the crew, right inside the dive subs. In this unprecedented motion picture event, made especially for IMAX® 3D Theatres and specially outfitted 35mm 3D theaters across the country, Cameron and his team bring audiences to sights not seen since the sinking 90 years ago and explore why the landmark vessel -- more than any shipwreck -- continues to intrigue and fascinate the public.

To support this unprecedented motion picture event, Walt Disney Pictures has made the unprecedented move of establishing a first-ever nationwide ticket sales program. Moviegoers can call 1-888-DISNEY-6 to purchase tickets for any show nationwide; actual tickets will then be mailed to the moviegoer's home.

"Jim's passion for this project is limitless," said Cook, in making the announcement. "'Ghosts of the Abyss' represents what the future of filmmaking can be, and we're excited to bring it to the public for the first time. We have gone 'out of the box' and created something new at every step of the way in bringing this film to the biggest screen imaginable."

"Because of this unique film, we have decided to create a unique way to purchase tickets," said Lylle Breier, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Special Events. "For the first time, moviegoers are able to purchase tickets for any show nationwide on our exclusive phone line -- 1-888-DISNEY-6 -- and then receive their tickets in the mail. By taking the ticket sales to a new level, we are providing a better service and less anxiety for audiences once they arrive at the theater."

"When you're a kid, growing up, you think of Titanic as a myth, a story, something Hollywood might have created," said director James Cameron. "But when you're there, and you can point at the wreck and say, 'That's where the band played, that's where First Officer Murdoch would have been loading people into boats,' it gets very personal. You can imagine and understand the event much more clearly. That's what we tried to bring to audiences with 'Ghosts of the Abyss.'"

"Ghosts of the Abyss" opens in IMAX 3D Theaters and specially outfitted 35mm 3D Theaters on April 11th.
