Autodesk online

According to a recent interview with Autodesk's CEO Carl Bass, in a few years the company's software would be running online 'cloud-based'. Quoting from the interview on TechCrunch, he is shown saying that "I'd say two to three years from now every one of our products will be used online." He goes on to say that the only way to use them will be online," which is being reported as a controversial statement.   Yes, but it was only a casual statement referring to a possible future idea for another industry to M&E.

There is now buzz on CGTalk and many other forums which I would say is unfounded. I would like to just ask everyone to relax.

Autodesk's Ken Pimentel has stated that Carl Bass's words are being taken too literally, and that he "just means that there will be ways the product will be experienced via the cloud." Ken Pimentel also mentions two methods of cloud connectivity are being researched.

Marc Petit, the Autodesk VP of Media & Entertainment, was much clearer back at the launch of the Autodesk 2013 range last month in San Francisco when he said the take up to online production for the Media & Entertainment sector will be much slower, because of the bandwidth appetite of most production pipelines. "Take simulation," he said. "The output of simulation in design is a picture that shows where the stress is. In visual effects, it’s terabytes of data."

Golly, kudos to those at maxunderground for unearthing this little storm in a teacup. I knew it was the post-NAB slow news week but this is ridiculous.
