VFX Oscar Bake-Off

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the seven films in the shortlist for achievement in Visual Effects at the 79th Academy Awards, scheduled for late February 2007.

Listed here are the films in alphabetical order:
  • Casino Royale
  • Eragon
  • Night at the Museum
  • Pirate of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
  • Poseidon
  • Superman Returns
  • X-Men: The Last Stand
A high-end bunch of VFX companies are in the running for Oscar nominations, with their work on CG productions this year. ILM is leading the lot with work on Davy Jones in ‘Pirates’, waterworks in ‘Poseidon’ and the dragon in ‘Eragon.’

Sony Picture Imageworks leads the pack of many studios called on the work on ‘Superman Returns’. Other studios in the running for their work in the field brought into contention include Framestore CFC, The Orphanage, Rhythm & Hues, Weta, MPC, Cinesite and RSP.

Come January 17, the Academy’s Visual Effects Award nominating committee will be shown 15-minute film shorts from each of the seven shortlisted films in this VFX Bake-Off. After this intensive screening, three actual nominees for the VFX Academy Award will be chosen.

Nominations announced on Jan. 23, 2007, at 1300 GMT (0530 PST) in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2006 will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center,

The ceremony will be shown live by the ABC (US) at Monday 26th, February 0100 GMT (Sunday 25th February 1700 PST).
