Time Travel Winners

Tue 21st Oct 2014, by Mike Hepburn | Eventcoverage

The Winners of THE FOUNDRY and CGSociety's Time Travel Challenge have been chosen and you will find the results below.

The brief:

The year is 2055 and the impossible just became possible.

Galaxy-wide technology giant, The Foundry, called a press conference last night to announce a universe-changing product innovation due for release in 2 months time.

The new product, codenamed ‘TIME’, manipulates the spatial continuum and enables users to travel back and forth from one era to another, without any restrictions.
You are part of an inner circle that has been trusted by The Foundry with restricted additional information about this top secret project. You have exclusive knowledge of how this new invention works, what it looks like and what it’s capable of.

Your mission, is to convince the public that TIME will change their lives and that The Foundry is the only company that should be trusted with this type of significant leap in technology, before the competition attempts to counter strike.

You must use MODO 801 to visualize the product ‘TIME’ and/or create a consumer friendly advertisement to sell this groundbreaking technology to the masses.

Artist's Comment:

Since the judging process was taking so long I guessed my chances were very low... and I had low expectations. I stopped myself from watching updates on the site.

So, I was working as usual on my computer and started to receive emails on my phone, and went into Hotmail on my computer to see one in particular but not this one... imagine my surprise when I saw that I was selecting this email for DELETION! Because I didn't have you (Mike from CGSociety)as a contact and I don't often read the email subjects! Especially when the email started with CONGRATULATIONS and I thought maybe another spam email telling me to click somewhere to claim a fake prize or something.

Then I focused and read the whole subject... and I realized!... NO WAY!... I won!?... NO WAAAAY!... and right now I'm alone at home since we are moving to México City ( I live now in Córdoba Argentina) and my wife (pregnant) and my boy (3 years old) are in Mexico right now... and they don't know yet!!!! So, I am alone in my house reading the email and I scream!!! I WONNNNN!!!!! I WONNNNN!!!! To nobody but the dog and myself!!! That’s amazing!!!! My hands are still trembling while I write this to you and I can't say it to anyone!!! hahaahahahah it's amazing guys...

I can't tell you how great this is right now... I can't afford a licence for modo and now I won one!!!!! You have no idea... Thank you all!!!!!!

Great 3D, modeling and sculpting is really solid. The shading and rendering is great. Really funny piece too. So it was technically really good and conceptually really good. - Brad Peebler

Ha, how do i feel? Great!!! I’ve been tracking the CGSociety Challenges for many years. But i've never had the guts to participate. When the time travel challenge came up and i saw that the main app had to be modo, i decided to join, because Modo is by far my favorite 3d application. And now i have won in the print category. Just Awesome. I'm definitely gonna participate in future CGCchallenges.

I would like to thank my family, friends, vfx and animation mentors, colorists and sound designers, and cast and crew who helped with my submission.

Thank you CG Society and The Foundry for the opportunity to compete in this challenge. The other submissions were amazing. I imagine it was very difficult for the judges to pick winners, so I’d like to thank them for their time and effort as well.

A special thanks to Chaos Group for giving me the opportunity to use V-Ray for Modo. My experience with Modo has changed the way I think about motion graphics and visual effects. Their products are the easy and fun way to model, uv, texture, rig, animate and render in 3d for film, TV, broadcast, and commercial work.
