• CGSociety :: Special Feature

    8 February 2013

CGSociety has been celebrating its first TEN years as the premier site for CG artists worldwide. As part of the celebrations we've challenged the community of artists to incorporate the number TEN into an image or video, whether literally or symbolically in one of the biggest CGChallenges we've ever run.

The inspiration was theme was pretty wide. It could be a child counting to 10 for the first time, a parody of the movie 10, a play on words (tentacles, tenacious, tenant), the Ten commandments, ten minutes to save the world, remember when you were ten (imaginary friends, bullies, nightmares, dreams for the future), what happened ten years ago, the power of ten.

CGSociety would like to thank the many, many artists who entered the milestone 'TEN' CGChallenge XXVII. Also, our sponsors that have contributed to the prizes, making this Challenge such a success. NVIDIA, Autodesk, the LightWave 3D Group, AMD, shotterstock, MAXON, Imagineer Systems, Chaos Group, Pixologic, RenderLife, Verold, IKinema, Xfrog, VideoCoPilot, 3DConnexion, Stash, Realflow, Wacom, Thinkinetic, SideFX Software, Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Ballistic Publishing, The Foundry, Luxology, Evermotion, Sketchfab and our own CGWorkshops. Also, thank you to the judges: Daniel Hornick, Ziv Qual, Steven Stahlberg, Pascal Blanche, Dr Mark Snoswell, Lorne Lanning, Leigh van der Byl, Jeff Mottle, Chris Sloan, Brom, Alex Morris, and previous winners Krishnamurti Costa, Alexander Preuss and DeHong He.

    Artist comments:
I feel honored to be part of the winners of this challenge.
My entry was also my first animation short and it was a time management nightmare. I only had 25 days until deadline, 30 some shots to do, the New Year holiday and a decalibrated laptop. My animation short entitled "Coffee break" has undergone three script changes until I had something decent to work with. I wanted to make use of pencil and paper backgrounds and animation but the deadline was very close so I have to make it all digitally, also it was the first time when I worked with sound.
This first experience I will put to good use and for now I think I have the momentum to create one short movie per year. I really want to thank my wife because she understood why I was working like a madman.'

    Judges' comments:
Stahlberg: Wonderful art, nice concept, ten is marginally connected to it. Meaning, it could've just as easily been 9 or 11 minutes.
Daniel Hornick: Beautiful and unique art style with simple yet effective animation to tell a great little story that's all about TEN. TEN minutes of peace would be nice.
Jeff Mottle: Clever story and great visual treatment.
Lorne Lanning: Great character/production designs, clever concept, nicely done.
Alexander Preuss: A Great piece of art and very well done... a bit unusual to regular CGS submissions but very good!
Dehong He: The illustration style is great and nice storytelling, you made a meaningful short animated film with "TEN" theme.

    Artist comments:
'Wow, thank you very much! Even though creating this image was very pleasing for itself, because I tried new things that worked out pretty well and learned a lot in the process, receiving the master prize in addition is the cherry on the cake.
I needed some time to develop a decent concept for the contest, but as soon I had the idea and all elements set, it went very smoothly and easily straight to finish. Of course I have to thank everyone who helped me on my way with valuable advice and feedback, I don't know where this would have ended without it. Artist comments: 'Y A H O O ! ! ! ! ! Many, many thanks from the entire Supersocks team. This one was such a labour of love. And time zones. We went into this challenge spread out over four countries (China, Spain, Columbia, and Canada) on four continents (Europe, South America, Asia and North America) so logistics looked daunting at one point. It didn’t help that a major holiday was involved (Christmas), cold & flu season, heavy workloads at our day jobs and personal commitments. Having said that, it’s a tribute to each member of the team that they didn't dwell on the negatives – they simply moved forward, focused on teamwork, artistry and having some fun with the Challenge. We hope every team had as much fun as we did.'

'This is awesome news. How do i feel? I already had a lot of fun creating the image. It wasn't easy to came up with an idea, I did a lot of sketching, thinking, mind-mapping, looking for ideas. This didn't produce any immmediate results, but fed my brain the right food for thought. In the end, the idea just formed on its own, growing spontaneously from the research, from my interests, inspirations... It took me a long time and work to finalize the image - but I was happy while doing it (ok, it's a big scene, there were frustrating moments as well). Winning the prize is the icing on the cake. I appreciate the feedback I got during the challenge, and tried to do the same when I could, that's what the challenge is for - pushing each other to do better.'

    Artist comments:
What a big surprise!! The great news that 'we won the Second place' is definitely like an extra sweet to our current Chinese New Year celebration. Thanks CGSociety and judges so much for giving 'No.10 Bus' the consideration.

It was not an easy journey. Everyone of us has very heavy load at our daily job, and some of the major creators (HanXue & ZuoJiang) even have to take care of children while taking part in the challenge after work. "Never be afraid of any challenge, no matter how hard we face in our life, and never forget our eternal wish which we made on the first day we joined this industry." It is just this simple but great sprit encourage us moving forward.

"My wife and I have been through 45 late nights," says Zuo Jiang. "We only have time to sit down at our desk and create things we love after we finished our daily job and sent our two-year-old daughter to bed. It is not easy, but we are glad that we support each other all the way through and finally got our little piece nicely done."

"Thanks to CGSociety and my friend who called us up to join this challenge," says Huang Weibo. "I had a chance to do something different from what I do every day at work. I feel so good that I had a chance to prove myself is a rigging artist not only a programming geek who protect pipeline safety everyday like a nerd."

There's one common friend of us, and just like what she said to our rigging man. “My Dear Rigging Master, every challenge we face in our life, don't shy away. Dare to think of something big. You are so cool that you have to put your name high and be seen by the world."

Artist comments: I have been always a big fan of CG Society challenges, so getting one of the prizes, especially in this anniversary edition, is really amazing experience for me.
The biggest problem with my illustration, as always, was to find an idea good enough for such a competition. It took me quite a long time and after that, the whole process was quite smooth. But it was still great opportunity to learn many new things. And that is the reason why I cannot wait for the next challenge!

    Artists Comments:
It’s my honor to be rewarded in CG Society’s TEN CGChallenge, this could be no better for me as a New Year’s gift. CGSociety means a lot to me, it’s always been my dream to show my works in there. This time’s work can be a milestone for me, I brought in new hardware and tried the new pipeline while working on it, so it is goodbye to my previous working experience. I tried my best to use all my knowledge and experience on all aspects, for modeling, textures, shading and rendering. I've input pretty much all I’ve considered the most suitable from my imagination.

It’s been a great and exciting personal experience for me, also quite challenging and much rewarding. I’m very happy that my work can be appreciated by you. It does mean very much to me and gives me the biggest encouragement to move further.

Thank you all a lot! Here I share the big joy from our Chinese New Year with you guys, wish all the best to you all! - ShangPeng Leng

'I can still remember the first CGChallenge Uplift Universe that I have participated back in 2008, and now we are already in 2013! I feel very honored to receive the Art Direction prize, and a big congratulations to all the other winners! There are so many great artworks completed for this challenge, I was really inspired by the creativity and the energy! I knew at the beginning that I wanted to do some medieval theme image with a classic oil painting look, and I slowly progressed with the theme to achieve this final piece Returning in Victory. I encourage all the young artists to participate the future challenges, as it is a great opportunity to learn from other artists and to exchange creative thoughts within a highly talented art community, it would be an extremely enriching experience for you all!'

Simon and me are doing our Master's Thesis right now and same goes for Julian with his Bachelor. We were in production for our short film when CGChallenge XXVII: TEN came up, but we really wanted to take part. So we made a tight plan and really managed to complete every shot for the trailer. 'wow wow! thank you very much! I'm super happy about this news! winning this contest means a lot to me! I want to express, that means a lot to me to receive this recognition from CG Society, as it is a reference to all the artists who are dedicated to animation, visual effects and all the creative and technical development in the audiovisual industry worldwide . If I had to call my piece, called "TEN Project", is simple I know, lol, but it fits perfectly with the story: D To me, the most important aspect of this project was to "balance" (yin yan). The delivery time is short (three months, and in my spare time). I also wanted to create a piece that was balanced in history, animation and visual Also, as a personal challenge, I wanted to leave my own schemes, and look for something different visually (cartoon style I usually do), so look for a different story and different references (moebius has been the most I've used, certainly ).

Well, In the beggining I didn´t want to joint this challenge, because I had a lot of work. But my friend and colleague inspired me, because he joined too. After that I started to thing about theme of my image. And because I like horror movies and recently I saw a few of these movies I decided to make a some horror theme image. I had a few ideas or concepts but in the end I decided for this one. The creating of the image took approximately two months in free time. But for sure it was a very good spent time and I am very happy I decided to join this challenge.

    Artist comments:
I knew the type of piece I wanted to create and the mood I wanted to portray, but like all creative processes, you never really know how it will turn out in the end. It's this journey you undertake, with the support of the CGSociety community, that makes taking part in the challenge so worthwhile. I am undoubtedly pleased with my finished piece, and wining the Concept Art prize is the icing on the cake. I have followed the CGSociety challenges for many years now but I never quite found the time to actually complete one. I am always amazed by the incredible talent that these challenges pull in from around the world, which makes winning the Concept Art prize even more special.

Here is my theme premise. 'The never ending search for the proof that we are not alone in the universe, could at long last be answered. But answered with what? TEN? On a distant world, at the centre of the universe, this is the discovery that we’re all waiting for. Are these ten stones the work of an intelligent alien civilisation, or simply a naturally occurring phenomenon? Why are there ten? and what does this mean? Whatever the outcome, this could very well be the start of the next chapter in human history, and the beginning of a new obsession imprinted in our minds; TEN!'

'first things first: WOW! Thank you so much! Really! How I feel? After spending months of anger, distress and joy on it - day in, day out - it's a huge pay off moment for me to see my work and my name among these great artists. Artist may know this feel to constantly pushing themselves to new limits, to be never completely happy about the way things look and feel, but for this moment the esteem that the judges have put into my work, awarding it with this price, is just awesome. In short words: I feel awesome. Thank you! I always have little to-do lists pinned on my screen. Things like "more debris", "make better hair for kitty", "work on that chair" and so on... but at this artwork, they seemed to have no end. The amount of detail was a real notepad-killer. It was also the first Image containing more than just a little "polish" in ZBrush. '

"This is it. Clocks stand still. Life lost its rhythm ten minutes after midnight and you are the very last of us, overlooking this toxic playground, this aftermath of your masters. Avoid breathing, little boy."

Every model was created by me. I used some references from Google and its 3D warehouse for modelling the cats hind end. Textures are self made or created by using cgtextures.com as a base resource and reference. Thanks go out to every competitor, colleague, friend and the crazy guys from Ballistic/CGsociety for making this great competition happen.

A little trivia: The cat's name is 'Oppenheimer'. '10 minutes after midnight' refers to the Doomsday clock from the 'Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists'. 'Little Boy' was also the name of the Hiroshima Bomb.

Level 10 was not easy to reach on Steamtris. It was so hard even for people that played the game for years. Legends were made about some players going that far, there was even a story about a kid that reached Level 10 after playing the game for only few months. Nobody believed in those myths for long time until one day there was a big announcement in local newspapers that rumors were actually true and that the little boy will actually demonstrate his skills on the square in our town. I still remember that moment, that Saturday, hundreds of people at our local square and him playing that game like nobody before. It was so magical, untrue, it was the moment when I started believing that in order to do big things in life you just need one substance, love for what you do. Hey that’s great. I cannot wait to get the prizes! It was really fun to be part of this competition, thank you guys for organising this. Looks like I have to try even more to get to first place.

'I’m really happy to know this! Also surprised, because I didn't think of nailing the modeling prize! Thank you very much CGSociety smile The inspiration to create this image came from friends as we were playing on brainstorming something about TEN. This image was created in two months working on a second shift after work. There are many things I'd like to keep working on, but at some point you’ve just got to call it done.
