Animation Award 'The Steampork' Andrei Brovcenco (framebreed), Vasile Brovcenco (vbrovcenco), Emanuel Balaceanu (ebalaceanu)
ROMANIAArtists comments: We are so happy to receive this award. We worked hard for this challenge and having a good result is very important to us.
This is the first work that we added for our portfolio as a small 3D animation studio and we sincerely thank CG Society for giving us such a great opportunity.
It was very nice to get feedback from so many different artists, and watching our and other's projects evolve from sketches of ideas, storyboards, previews, test renders and final submissions. Judge's comments: Anthony Lucas: Great idea with a clear central story conflict. Good design. Very whimsical and surprising.
Philip Straub:Just good fun!
Michael Dashow:The most imaginative character in the competition... Well done!

 | | | Art Direction Award 'Mirzoyan’s Odysseus' Arthur Mirzoyan (Mizoyan)
RUSSIAArtist comments: 'Mirzoyan`s Odysseus' was very hard work for me. More than 6 years I worked as concept artist and production designer. So creating such illustrations (concepts) was usual thing for me. But when i put more than 18 illustrations in one second with little difference between them, that was really hard. And really interesting, so now i think about short length movie in this style. Judge's comments: Anthony Lucas:Nice design. Beautiful execution of images.
Michael Dashow:Bravo for a very stylish approach. Links

 | | Best Character Award 'Alice's adventures in Steamland' Guillaume Dubois (Guilome)
BELGIUMArtist comments: I first think of the Queen, but I was not very happy with the subject, I wanted to do something other than human. I thought about the cat but could not imagine any other than Disney. But when I thought of the caterpillar, half an hour after, I nearly have the final design in front of me. The people who have watched my work take form have played a important role in the creation of this image. Nothing was fixed when I begin and I've tried to listen to the advice of the people and they really helped me a lot.

 | | | Compositing and Editing Award 'Siege of Syracuse' Thiago Pires (Thiago-Pires)
BRAZILArtist comments: We believe that our greatest challenge was creativity versus deadline. We had a lot of jobs going on at work and althouth we started the development as soon as we heard about the challange, we were only able to shoot at the second week of January so there was a short time to finish all the post production. We got our first Flying Ship rendered 4 days before the deadline and the 3d guys still had a lot to do in those last days. Judge's comments Anthony Lucas: Huge adventure.
Philip Straub: How 300 of you- seriously- amazing work!
Michael Dashow:Lovely opening shot!

 | | Concept Art Award 'Legend of Yamoto' Yap Kunrong (krypt)
Tokyo, JAPANArtist comments: I'm very glad to have participated in this challenge (my first), as I have seen lots of great works from the previous challenges. I took it as a chance to have fun and hone my skills, and indeed I think I've achieved my objective! It was nice doing mechanical steampunk art. Also, I had fun seeing how differently everyone approach a similar theme. Weird processes, safe processes, an eye opener for sure!

 | | | Modeling Award 'The Old Man and The Sea' Alexandra Ciolac (musi), Andreas Normand Grontved (andreasng), Sasha Ciolac, Esben Toft (toft)
DENMARKArtist comments: We had very hard time finishing this project... We had some big set backs, when I thought we will not be able to finish, and to be honest, I was ready to give up several times. But the concept art Andreas (Andreas Normand Grontved) have created and the way story was told by Esben (Esben Toft Jacobsen) where so inspiring that I couldn't give up... Last month of the project Andreas and me got very little sleep, we had only nights to work on the project from our daytime jobs - and Esben got a full time day-and-night job because he became a father!
Despite all difficulties, it was fun for me to work together with my team members, we have finished our film, and we got a production baby Judge's comments Anthony Lucas:I loved this design and idea. I think this is brilliant. The fish creature needed to be setup for the story better. Think Jaws, marauding then attacking. There needed to be more tension. Wonderful concept, great sound but needs better timing in the direction to reveal the drama. The audience could sustain being teased about the fish a little before revealing all.
Michael Dashow: A fun and original steampunk vision. The fish and the boat were my favorite steampunk designs in the Challenge. The animation made it feel like it was stop-motion instead of CG, which I really enjoyed.

 | | Sculpture 'Flight of Icarus' Ricardo Tobon (rtobon)
USAArtist comments: Participating in CGSociety’s Steampunk: Myths and Legends challenge was an awesome adventure for my team and I. We were amazed with how much we learned during these past few months. Through the process of creating the “Flight of Icarus” video we refined our craft but also learned about interaction with other creators inside an independent production scenario.

 | | | Texture 'Titanomachy: fall of the Hyperion' Marcin Jakubowski (balloontree)
POLANDArtist comments: I'm very happy that I joined the contest. Probably I wouldn't put so much effort into a personal work if I made it just for fun. The competition was a good way to improve my skills. Judge's comments leigh: Could have benefitted from a wider, more dramatic angle, and more emphasis on the Titan. Because the train is the dominant thing in the image - I only noticed the Titan after looking at the image for a few seconds. But it's a good image nonetheless.

 | | VFX 'The Battle of Bridge City' Arseniy Chebynkin (ArsXC)
RUSSIAArtist comments: For this trailer, the vast majority of time was spent on creating the models of machinery; the train and the airships. The animation and VFX had to be squeezed into a real narrow time span. We intentionally strafed from realism in the direction of a bright cartoony style, which was a hard thing to do. Tons of color correction and light effects were used. I hope that later on we shall build this project up to our initial expectations, because we haven't really introduced the audience to all of the details of the machinery and the city. Judge's comments: Anthony Lucas: Great scale and design.
Philip Straub: EPIC! The opening sequence is awesome.
Michael Dashow:I especially liked the work done on the female character.

 | | | Digital Painting 'Icarus Day' Tomasz Jedruszek (Morano)
POLANDArtist comments: "The Challenge theme was really cool this time and I do not regret any
of those hours and pain in my eyeballs, just because I couldn't miss
it. This was one of those Images I can see in my mind for years, and
they just wait for the moment to paint them. I hope I could reveal
them all soon with my Venhelis project. Once I learned about new CG
Chellenge I already had that concept, and just had to wait for some
free time to paint it - that is why it was super fast even as for me
which Im pretty fast already.

 | | Landscape Matte Painting 'Don Quixote: Suppressor of engines' Marek Madej (Mardukk)
POLANDArtist comments: The last version of this image was entirely different to the first
one. There was a moment when I thought I wasn't going to be able to
finish it. But when the idea with Don Quixote came to me I immediately
got the much needed motivation to paint. It took my about 14 hours to
paint and it was a great occasion to improve my skills.

 | | | Lighting 'Odysseus' Departure' Aleksander (Olek) Novak-Zemplinski (zemplinski)
USAArtist comments: From the start I knew I wanted to convey a very nostalgic atmosphere.
Boldness of the industrial revolution of the Victorian era with its
smoky, hazy air is a perfect fodder for imagination. Combine that
with Mythology that is so rich in universal truths and you get an
ocean of possible scenarios. The story is essentially about a woman
who is deprived of her loved one and forced to resolve into complete
self-reliance by forces of history and politics in the hands of men.
During the entire process I was obsessively listening to film music
from Alien and Aliens as well as Blade Runner. This helped me greatly
to stay focused on the feeling I wanted to convey. Judge's comments leigh: I like this. It's very steampunk - I really like the
perspective in the image, and the mood. I think the story has been
very well portrayed in the image.
