The CGSociety is proud to present the winners of the challenge with the largest prize draw in our history.

    CG CHALLENGE XXIII
    WINNERS ANNOUNCED
    26 February 2009

This is the fourth CGChallenge in which we have recognized both still image and film works. With this challenge the quality and breadth of work is astonishing. Many of the entries demonstrate a level of expertise, production standards and teamwork that is equal to any professional studio. It is especially encouraging to see such a breadth of styles this time. We have pure CG works, animated paintings, live action with practical effects, cartoon – the list goes on.

I feel that this challenge really does mark a major milestone in the evolution of the CGSociety. Not so many years ago there was a degree of elitism towards pure 3D work. We now have digital artists of diverse skills working together to create astounding works of art and entertainment that are world class – in every imaginable style. This is how it should be – it’s not how you create a work, it's the quality of the finished work and its impact on viewers that is important.

So it is with particular pride and joy that I congratulate all of the entrants who participated; the judges; the staff of Ballistic; the forum leaders; our generous sponsors and of course this year’s winners.

Mark Snoswell, President of the CGSociety.

    Bonsaininja Studio
    ITALY

    Artist comments:
"Our piece was inspired by the legend of the Golem, telling the story of Rabbi Loew, who created an animated being entirely from inanimate matter to defend the Prague ghetto and we decided to produce a trailer out of it for the CGChallenge."

    Judge's comments
Anthony Lucas: Epic. Masterful technical achievement.

Simon Dominic: I feel like I just stepped out of the cinema.

    Philip Straub:Outfreakinstanding!

    'Atlantis - Inconvenient Truth'
Martin Koehler (arcaneg), Christian Stadach (cmdrpi), Simon Prager (SimonDarmstadt) and Christopher Hempel (Xr4t3d)
    GERMANY

    Artist comments:
'Working on the project was quite hard, because actually none of us had enough time for it. But we took the time besides our other projects, because this was lots of fun and really worth it. The idea and story changed many times. To get the project ready in time we worked day and night in the last week, and really: "day and night".'

    Judge's comments
Anthony Lucas:Some great design. Good idea. Where the animation is patchy the concept makes up for it.

Simon Dominic:Wow, this is slick, with a brilliantly conceived theme too.

Philip Straub:Extremely professional on every level. Top marks from me.

Michael Dashow: Beautiful rendering, design, and camerawork.

    Individual Video Master Award
    'Hemlock'
    Tyson Ibele (ivanisavich)
    NEW ZEALAND

    Artist comments:
This year's contest was a lot of fun, especially since the competition was very close due to the large number of high-quality entries. I felt very inspired the whole way through watching other peoples' progress, and that's what kept me driven to finish my entry on time. This challenge theme allowed for a lot of creativity, and since I've wanted to do a film set in the steampunk universe for a while now, it was a perfect motivator. Thanks to everyone who offered me encouragement and critique during the production of Hemlock, and congrats to the other winners and entrants!

    Judge's comments
Anthony Lucas:Great execution. Fantastic mood. Is the steampunk robot a victim of the well? Marvellously animated.

    Simon Dominic:
What a great story with superb delivery.

Michael Dashow:What a great mood set throughout the entire piece. The lighting, camera-work, and sound were wonderfully effective, and the ending was terrific. Easily the most thoroughly-executed story of the bunch. Great work overall!

    Grzegorz Jonkajtys:
Great storytelling and directing skills, not to mention excellent lighting and animation.

    'Ulysses’ Dreams'
    Marc Mordelet (visionmaster2)
    FRANCE

    Artists comments:
"I had a great fun testing some shots I had in mind, and this challenge gave me the opportunity to question myself about my work process. Especially after I submitted my video, when i saw the works of the other people (especially Tyson Ibele), and after a long discussion with a friend, this evidence came to me : I need to step up to the next level, and make a short movie."

    Judges comments:
Anthony Lucas: Fantastic concept, modeling and lighting. Great design and animation. Great stuff!

    Simon Dominic:
    Completely mental, I LOVE it!

Philip Straub:A unique, bizarre, and creative vision.

Michael Dashow: I loved the clever use of fonts in the robot's body - very stylish (as was the rest of this film.)

    Laurent Pierlot (sato)
    USA

    Artist comments:
It is a great honor for me to get the Excellence prize, especially considering the quality of the works that have been submitted for the contest.
When I saw that the subject for the contest was Steampunk, I just couldn't help myself. I really appreciated the feedbacks I got in the WIP forum.
It was really hard for me to finish that picture, I'm working full time so it was only possible with the patience of my family on the weekends and late nights.

Andrei Brovcenco (framebreed), Vasile Brovcenco (vbrovcenco), Emanuel Balaceanu (ebalaceanu)
    ROMANIA

    Artists comments:
We are so happy to receive this award. We worked hard for this challenge and having a good result is very important to us.
This is the first work that we added for our portfolio as a small 3D animation studio and we sincerely thank CG Society for giving us such a great opportunity.
It was very nice to get feedback from so many different artists, and watching our and other's projects evolve from sketches of ideas, storyboards, previews, test renders and final submissions.

    Judge's comments:
Anthony Lucas: Great idea with a clear central story conflict. Good design. Very whimsical and surprising.

    Philip Straub:Just good fun!

    Art Direction Award
    'Mirzoyan’s Odysseus'
    Arthur Mirzoyan (Mizoyan)
    RUSSIA

    Artist comments:
'Mirzoyan`s Odysseus' was very hard work for me. More than 6 years I worked as concept artist and production designer. So creating such illustrations (concepts) was usual thing for me. But when i put more than 18 illustrations in one second with little difference between them, that was really hard. And really interesting, so now i think about short length movie in this style.

    Judge's comments:
Anthony Lucas:Nice design. Beautiful execution of images.

    Best Character Award
    'Alice's adventures in Steamland'
    Guillaume Dubois (Guilome)
    BELGIUM

    Artist comments:
I first think of the Queen, but I was not very happy with the subject, I wanted to do something other than human. I thought about the cat but could not imagine any other than Disney. But when I thought of the caterpillar, half an hour after, I nearly have the final design in front of me. The people who have watched my work take form have played a important role in the creation of this image. Nothing was fixed when I begin and I've tried to listen to the advice of the people and they really helped me a lot.

    Compositing and Editing Award
    'Siege of Syracuse'
    Thiago Pires (Thiago-Pires)
    BRAZIL

    Artist comments:
We believe that our greatest challenge was creativity versus deadline. We had a lot of jobs going on at work and althouth we started the development as soon as we heard about the challange, we were only able to shoot at the second week of January so there was a short time to finish all the post production. We got our first Flying Ship rendered 4 days before the deadline and the 3d guys still had a lot to do in those last days.

    Judge's comments
    Anthony Lucas: Huge adventure.

Philip Straub: How 300 of you- seriously- amazing work!

    Concept Art Award
    'Legend of Yamoto'
    Yap Kunrong (krypt)
    Tokyo, JAPAN

    Artist comments:
I'm very glad to have participated in this challenge (my first), as I have seen lots of great works from the previous challenges. I took it as a chance to have fun and hone my skills, and indeed I think I've achieved my objective! It was nice doing mechanical steampunk art. Also, I had fun seeing how differently everyone approach a similar theme. Weird processes, safe processes, an eye opener for sure!

    Modeling Award
'The Old Man and The Sea'
Alexandra Ciolac (musi), Andreas Normand Grontved (andreasng), Sasha Ciolac, Esben Toft (toft)
    DENMARK

    Artist comments:
We had very hard time finishing this project... We had some big set backs, when I thought we will not be able to finish, and to be honest, I was ready to give up several times. But the concept art Andreas (Andreas Normand Grontved) have created and the way story was told by Esben (Esben Toft Jacobsen) where so inspiring that I couldn't give up... Last month of the project Andreas and me got very little sleep, we had only nights to work on the project from our daytime jobs - and Esben got a full time day-and-night job because he became a father!
Despite all difficulties, it was fun for me to work together with my team members, we have finished our film, and we got a production baby smile

    Judge's comments
Anthony Lucas:I loved this design and idea. I think this is brilliant. The fish creature needed to be setup for the story better. Think Jaws, marauding then attacking. There needed to be more tension. Wonderful concept, great sound but needs better timing in the direction to reveal the drama. The audience could sustain being teased about the fish a little before revealing all.

Michael Dashow: A fun and original steampunk vision. The fish and the boat were my favorite steampunk designs in the Challenge. The animation made it feel like it was stop-motion instead of CG, which I really enjoyed.

    Artist comments:
Participating in CGSociety’s Steampunk: Myths and Legends challenge was an awesome adventure for my team and I. We were amazed with how much we learned during these past few months. Through the process of creating the “Flight of Icarus” video we refined our craft but also learned about interaction with other creators inside an independent production scenario.

    Texture
    'Titanomachy: fall of the Hyperion'
    Marcin Jakubowski (balloontree)
    POLAND

    Artist comments:
I'm very happy that I joined the contest. Probably I wouldn't put so much effort into a personal work if I made it just for fun. The competition was a good way to improve my skills.

    Judge's comments
leigh: Could have benefitted from a wider, more dramatic angle, and more emphasis on the Titan. Because the train is the dominant thing in the image - I only noticed the Titan after looking at the image for a few seconds. But it's a good image nonetheless.

    VFX
    'The Battle of Bridge City'
    Arseniy Chebynkin (ArsXC)
    RUSSIA

    Artist comments:
For this trailer, the vast majority of time was spent on creating the models of machinery; the train and the airships. The animation and VFX had to be squeezed into a real narrow time span. We intentionally strafed from realism in the direction of a bright cartoony style, which was a hard thing to do. Tons of color correction and light effects were used. I hope that later on we shall build this project up to our initial expectations, because we haven't really introduced the audience to all of the details of the machinery and the city.

    Judge's comments:
Anthony Lucas: Great scale and design.

Philip Straub: EPIC! The opening sequence is awesome.

I especially liked the work done on the female character.

    POLAND

    Artist comments:
"The Challenge theme was really cool this time and I do not regret any
of those hours and pain in my eyeballs, just because I couldn't miss
it. This was one of those Images I can see in my mind for years, and
they just wait for the moment to paint them. I hope I could reveal
them all soon with my Venhelis project. Once I learned about new CG
Chellenge I already had that concept, and just had to wait for some
free time to paint it - that is why it was super fast even as for me
    which Im pretty fast already.

    Marek Madej (Mardukk)

    Artist comments:
The last version of this image was entirely different to the first
one. There was a moment when I thought I wasn't going to be able to
finish it. But when the idea with Don Quixote came to me I immediately
got the much needed motivation to paint. It took my about 14 hours to

    Lighting
    'Odysseus' Departure'
    Aleksander (Olek) Novak-Zemplinski (zemplinski)
    USA

    Artist comments:
From the start I knew I wanted to convey a very nostalgic atmosphere.
Boldness of the industrial revolution of the Victorian era with its
smoky, hazy air is a perfect fodder for imagination. Combine that
with Mythology that is so rich in universal truths and you get an
ocean of possible scenarios. The story is essentially about a woman
who is deprived of her loved one and forced to resolve into complete
self-reliance by forces of history and politics in the hands of men.
During the entire process I was obsessively listening to film music
from Alien and Aliens as well as Blade Runner. This helped me greatly
to stay focused on the feeling I wanted to convey.

    Judge's comments
leigh: I like this. It's very steampunk - I really like the
perspective in the image, and the mood. I think the story has been
very well portrayed in the image.
