MARI: Texture Challenge 2013 Winners

Mon 27th Jan 2014, by Mike Hepburn | Eventcoverage

The Winners of THE FOUNDRY and CGSociety's MARI Texture Challenge have been chosen and below you will find the results.

THE FOUNDRY, makers of the 3D digital paint tool, MARI, supplied CGSociety with a sci-fi hover bike 3D model by the famous designer Harald Belker. Harald’s vehicle and prop designs have appeared in countless films, including Total Recall, Oblivion and the Batmobile in Batman & Robin. The model was freely given to the World’s texture artists, so they could bring it to life using MARI.

The artwork was judged by the crème de la crème of texture mastery: Image Engine’s Justin Holt, MPC’s Daniele Orsetti, MARI’s Product Manager, Jack Greasley, and CG Talk’s chief moderator Leigh van der Byl. Also, Mr. Harald Belker himself took part. Together they concentrated on the composition, attention to detail and general awesomeness. THE FOUNDRY and CGSociety wanted to see textures that told a story. They looked for detailed, realistic textures in a lookdev-ready setup (a minimum of colour, bump and spec maps for each shader).

Thanks to all our wonderful competitors! The incredible quality made it very hard for the judges!

Almost $30,000 of prizes from HP, NVIDIA, THE FOUNDRY and more, were on offer...

I'm so happy to have won the 3rd Prize, but more than receiving the prize was the opportunity to learn Mari, which is a nice and professional software that helps a lot with high resolution textures.

The final image doesn't do it justice, but the works in progress show a stunning attention to detail and intricate texture work across the whole asset.
Jack Greasley

He was able to really transform this model from being generic to being something quite interesting to look at. His texture work is elegant, subtle yet detailed in the right areas. The shader work is fantastic. This piece really stands out for me. Bravo.
Justin Holt

First I want thanks to CGsociety, Harald Berker and The Foundry for this challenge. When I saw a new challenge on CGSociety, I knew it would be fun to join. I spent a few nice days and much nicer nights on texturing. My texturing skills were pushed to the next level. I changed the texture design several times in my head. But in the end I am satisfied with the result. Although it could be a little bit better. Mari has some e features, which makes texturing even easier. Especially the new layer system, shared layers and procedural layers are wonderful. Congratulations to the other competitors who have completed their work. Some of their entries were really great!

It can be hard to make  texturing interesting when using only one base color. Vsha managed to play with small details to differentiate the different bits of the vehicle, achieving a very pleasant and realistic final look. Bump And specular maps are consistent with the the colour he painted, adding realism to the final render. The image has been presented in a clean way, giving priority to the texture work.
Daniele Orsetti

I would like to thank the organizers, the sponsors and the judges for the great contest. It is my first international challenge. Initially I didn't have the courage to sign in, but my girlfriend convinced me. I earned a lot of precious experience and I found out that Mari is really simple and intuitive software.
After the first sketches I prepared my library and started painting. The biggest challenge, as far as the form of the model was quite complicated, was to keep it compact after adding all the different metal textures, colors, illustrations and tags. I appreciated the WIP section where I had a chance to present the background of my project as well. I guess, sometimes, to get out in the fresh air to take a few photo references is more than an ideal price for creating textures.
I also want to congratulate all the competitors for their awesome works and I wish them all the best in their professional life.

Very nice work with lots of tiny details. I like the color scheme and the fact boyKot tried to imagine something different than a racing bike, and he definitely achieved a good result overall.
Daniele Orsetti

I like the graffiti and there is good detailing on the weathered style of this entry, would fit right in to Mad Max.
Jack Greasley

Cool weathered looking details.
