• CGSociety :: Special Feature

    28 November 2013, by Paul Hellard

    CGSociety has had a successful inaugural collaboration with TornadoTwins, YouTube’s number one game development channel, to host this global game challenge for the world’s top 3D artists. They ere invited to turn their art into a complete first person shooter using FPS Control, the Twins’ plugin for the Unity Game Engine. They say it used to be impossible, but now you can create a first person shooter in less than three months. FPS Control is unique in bringing artificial intelligence, weapons and interactive worlds to life, without the need of a development team.

    Participating artists will create up to two minutes of gameplay. The finished games will then be exported to Unity3d format for play in the browser, so that all competition viewers and judges can easily play the finished games. Each contestant or team had to submit at least two WIPs and then the final game with splash screen.

    There were tutorials, free sound effects, animations and textures will give a running start.

    'Ever since we found out about the challenge we took it as an opportunity to test ourselves with a real project. We started out as a team of 2 artists for quite some time until eventually we got stuck. At that point we asked for help from the rest of the team at our studio, which aided and worked really hard nearing the final hours… creating a lot of interest in the challenge and the game itself.

    As the entire idea was making a FPS, we wanted something that was really different from the usual games we knew in this genre and not be “just another” FPS.

    Imagination is a very important element in our philosophy as a studio and we wanted that element to be the main focus in our gameplay, so we built it with this idea as the central theme. A kid playing with his imagination, using his fingers to emulate the weapons was our starting point, so the player could also remember his/her good old days as a kid.

    All the tutorials and tools made by Tornado Twins, as well as the simplicity of learning Unity helped us a lot in developing the game staying true to our original idea, and our progress was really noticeable considering it was our first time using this program.

    As a studio we feel incredibly grateful to CGSociety, The Tornado Twins, Full Sail University and the rest of the sponsors for creating this challenge and allowing participation of so many regions from around the world. We also feel really proud of the results. We know this is just the first step for what is really coming ahead, and we plan to continue developing F.P.S. There’s still a lot to do, but for now the entire team feels 2/3 thankful and 1/3 excited or it might be the other way around, who knows. We just know we are overwhelmed for winning this challenge.

    I really want to say thank you to the TornadoTwins and Full Sail for conceiving, and CGSociety for hosting, this amazing challenge! Without the use of FPSControl, not to mention the software and services provided by the other sponsors, it would have been impossible to create Gumball Alley in the three months of the challenge. I'm also in debt to my friends who helped write the dialogue and give voice to the player and mutinying crew, as well as those who helped me improve the game by doing playtests. I also want to thank all the other contestants, and the members on the FPSControl Forums, who fostered a very supportive environment for solving technical issues and sorting out story/gameplay challenges.

    I'm very proud of Gumball Alley, especially considering that for the first half of the challenge I was in the middle of crunch at work and couldn't put any real time into the game. Being a one man team, I knew from the beginning that I was going to have to stick to some pretty strict limitations if I was going to finish on time. When it came to what could reasonably be done, I was glad to have resources like GameTextures, Mixamo, and Allegorithmic which helped me produce significantly more assets for my game than I could if they all had to be made from scratch. Towards the end, I had to abandon a lot of the gameplay features that weren't complete, and actually had to cut about 75% of the dialogue that had been written. I didn't want to cut down on the mutiny dialogue, because it was really funny, but without additional gameplay moments to engage the player, it ultimately hurt the pacing of the story. It was a lot of work, but in the end, I learned a lot about game development, and had a lot of fun!

    “Wow! It is an honor to be part of the winners of this great challenge. Mostly because the majority of the entries are top notch. This game challenge gave us the opportunity to show the creativity and quality of our team, Hotcreat.

    We wanted to create something unusual that would catch the attention at the first glance. With that in mind, a chubby nerd with toy guns being chased by creatures covered in sugar seemed perfect. We had several challenges during the development: creating a fun gameplay and a unique concept, after all, our hero is a nerd, something very uncommon in games.
    We would like to thank the CGSociety community for the support. The TornadoTwins Brothers. It was a amazing experience.
