    Image Master
    'Respite of a Woodchoper'
    David Forest (Frotze)
    CANADA

    Artist comments:
Wow, words can't describe the joy I feel right now! I don't believe I've ever put so much effort into something. It really took patience and dedication. On multiple occasions, I redrew entire parts because although it 'worked', it didn't spell winner to me. For that I'd like to thank everybody that commented on my works in progress. If the occasional praise was really rewarding and meant I was on the right track, it's really the harsher critics that made the piece what it is today. Thank you all, I really mean it!'

    Judges comments:
"A strange and surreal concept, beautifully realized."

    Image Excellence
    'The Blessed And The Damned'
    Vilius Petrauskas (Basazole)
    LITHUANIA

    Artist comments:
It is the first time that I took part in a CGSociety challenge and it was very successful for me! When I heard the topic of this challenge for the first time I felt that it is exactly for me. I like pictures portraying visions, dreams, unknown spaces and landscapes. I like pictures that speak for themselves. It was hard to find time to start, but the voice inside persisted: "You must to do it!". When there were only a few days left to the end of the competition I couldn't even sleep. I kept seeing new visions for my painting.'

    Judges comments:
"Brilliant use of 3d and 2d!" - Samuel Poirier

"Great lighting and mood! I also like the cool blue colour touches here and there..." - Szymon Biernacki

"The essence of unexpected moments and bizzare visions captured in wonderfuly painted and textured image with great lighting. I was just invited to someone's dream and I am both scared and eager to explore it." - Juraj Molcak

    Artist comments:
'It is really an honour, I would like to thank CGSociety and all the judges for this award. I appreciate it very much. I started this project as a chance for myself to try out some new ideas as well as techniques in matte painting and compositing. It is more than just an entry for the CGChallenge, but it is actually my exploration for more knowledge in art and design. Thank you very much to my family and friends who have supported me and have given me their honest comments on this project.'

    Video - Excellence
'Traveling with my Thoughts full of Hope'
    Adrian Baluta (adib)
    ROMANIA

    Artist comments:
"I'm so happy than I cannot believe this is real. What I can say is that I worked on this movie for more than 18 hours a day and the hardest part was to manage all the background and animation.

Dreamscape is a great theme, and brings a lot of nice ideas, but it is really hard to put into practice because of the amount of work. So I start to put on paper the script and tried to find the best way to show my dreamscape. For the character design of the creature I wanted to give a different style, a cartoon one and I decided to go with classic 2D. A lot to draw and paint.

Traveling on a different world through water was the solution of the moment, and I am happy with what I chose. I'm a fan of Hayao Miyazaki and he inspires me a lot. The music also was really hard to find, something to fit with what I need. But at the end all things went well."

    Judges comments:

" It's always great to see traditional animation showing so strongly amongst the 3D stuff." - Anton Fletcher

'This is an incredible news! We are very proud to be rewarded by the jury. We are happy to have finished on time despite a scenario written in one hour on a kebab restaurant's table. Unfortunately a lot of scenes were cut to fit the deadline. This was a very enriching experience, we had a lot of fun doing this project and we hope you had the same pleasure watching it. Congrats to all the other challengers. Fun always wins!'

    Artist comments:
Our team is very proud to present 'Waking Gus.' Our aim with this short was to recreate a dream that everyone could immediately relate to. Who hasn't dreamed of falling, that sickening feeling in your stomach as you plummet to earth, the ground getting closer and closer until...BAM...you wake to find yourself safe in bed.

    Judges comments:
"Hilarious short. Very bizzare too on the other hand. Ending works no matter how many times I see it. Simple yet great visuals and animation."- Juraj Molcak

    'Marooned'
    Laurent Pierlot (sato)

    Artist comments:
It was a pretty hard challenge with lots of awesome art. It took me a lot of time to create the 3D scene itself which left me little time for the fun part that is the painting at the end.

    Judges comments:
"Very strong piece! I love the mood and design of the background. The mushrooms are fenomenal!"

    Art Direction
    'Chaos Melody'
    Sergey Skachkov (Atris)
    RUSSIA

    Artist comments:
The unreal world of 'Chaos Melody' arose like the dream in which realms of past and present, a delusion and an joke intertwined. This work came easy to me, and although not everything turned out as I wanted, I am very pleased with the result. Thank the judges for the high rating!

    Judges comments:
"I like the consistency in the design of all the elements in the painting. Even reflections in the water have more of an angular shapes coresponding to the overall style of the image." - Szymon Biernacki

"Am I dreaming? Things look familiar but are they? I am a stranger here... This image reminds me of some very last century visionary pioneer's work. A parallel world that is both so close and so far to the reality."

    Concept Art
    'Pixel Fishes'
    Michal Milkowski (tonpix)
    POLAND

    Artist comments:
I started from scratch and worked in an entirely different way. I used almost only the force of my imagination, relying heavily on shapes telling me what to do next. I also wanted to achieve a surrealistic effect. Making nonsense things that could make viewers a bit surprised was my illustrating motive.

    Judges comments:
"I absolutely love everything about this image! The overall mood and design of all the elements are simply amazing! And the trees just made my day wink Fantastic!" - Szymon Biernacki

"Nice twist to the classical surreal landscapes with a signature of digital era."- Juraj Molcak

    Music and Sound
    'The Retrospects'
    Dong-hoon Kim (Georgie)
    SOUTH KOREA

    Artist comments:
From the original storyboarding to the final video, I believe it took about two months. It was possible since the challenge allowed the use of pre-made assets of my own, such as the human model and one of the city. All the other models and props are new works of mine created specifically for this challenge.

    Judges comments:
"Not as imaginative as many other entries but the choice of the story nicely fit in the challenge theme."
    - Juraj Molcak

    Texturing
    'Back to my reality'
    Thibaut Claeys (Bito)
    CANADA

    Artist comments:
I was very happy to join this contest. The theme was really interesting as it has no limitation. I wouldn't probably put so much effort into a personal work if I made it just for fun. The competition was a good way to improve my skills.

    Judges comments:
"An amazing amount of detail and depth."
