Cinesite (Europe) Ltd announced that they have won a major contract for the Models and Miniatures on the forthcoming Harry Potter installment Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Warner Bros. have subcontracted Cinesite with all the Model Unit construction and miniature photography.
Construction work will begin immediately on the huge models of Hogwarts, Privet Drive, a huge marble staircase and other significant structures within the film. This major build will continue until early May 2003 at Shepperton Studios workshops. Photography is scheduled to run from early June until early September 2003.
Jos Granell, who joined Cinesite at the beginning of January as Director of Models, will be supervising the project, having worked previously on the models for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The models for the previous films, designed by Stuart Craig, have won great acclaim within the film industry, and the high standard of visual effects for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were recently rewarded with a BAFTA nomination last Monday.
Cinesite (Europe) Ltd have created substantial volumes of digital effects for the past two Harry Potter films, but this is their first opportunity to work on Models and Miniatures for the productions.
2003 looks set to be a successful year for Cinesite, who are currently also in production on effects for American Girl, Ella Enchanted and Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life: Tomb Raider 2. Effects Associates are also currently creating substantial physical effects for Thunderbirds.
