THE 2011 CG WHIZ WINNERS ARE REVEALED AT ESCAPE STUDIOS' LONDON HEADQUARTERS

The much anticipated winners of Escape Studios' 2011 CG Whiz Competition have been announced and captured by sponsor and Oscar-winning visual effects company The Mill. Here is a report on the awards from Escape Studios' Isabelle Duarte.

Thanks to sponsors, The Mill, Autodesk, HP, CGSociety, 3D Artist and Digital Artist who have supported the competition and have helped aspiring CG artists break into the world of film, TV, games or commercials. The room was busy with noise and champagne as Daniel Danielsson waited patiently to find out whether he had scooped first place.

He needn’t have worried though as Mark Cass our General Manager and head judge Lee Danskin soon explained why Daniel deserved first place. With no professional training at all, he took it upon himself to learn all of the software that enabled him to create such a professional looking showreel.

The audience at the event was packed out with industry pros, industry bloggers and full-time employees at The Mill. But it was also filled with a few familiar faces. Adam Droy, the first ever winner of the CG Whiz competition, now works at The Mill full time and he was there to lend his support to Daniel. Adam really does understand the doors that this competition will open for our 2011 winner.

We asked Daniel, right after he’d found out that he’d won, how he felt on a scale of one to ten, he told us after some thought, that actually, he ‘Felt – like a Viking!’ For us, that comment really did sum up what this competition is about: giving people the recognition they deserve and help them break into the industry.

All that’s left for us to say is thank you. Thanks to everyone who participated and gave this competition their all. Your efforts didn’t go unnoticed and the quality of work submitted surpassed all of our expectations. Thanks also to our sponsors: The Mill, CGSociety, HP, Autodesk, 3D Artist and Digital Artist without whom, this competition wouldn’t have been possible.
So, that’s it from us this year – bring on CG Whiz 2012!
