All judging will be performed internally by the jury. First and foremost, submitted works will be judged on the strength of their emotive and narrative elements, with technical excellence as secondary criteria. Participating artists must demonstrate clarity of thought and emotion in their finished images.

Michael Dashow

Michael Dashow has been a digital illustrator over twenty years, creating book and magazine covers and concept art for Blizzard Entertainment, Microsoft Game Studios, Square/Enix, the Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy, ImagineFX, and many more.

By day he works as an Art Director at social network hi5, while by night he works on his own projects, usually the humorous takes on science fiction and fantasy for which he is well known.

A long-time Challenge participant in the CGSociety Challenges, he will miss the camaraderie of his friends in the competition but looks forward to deciding everyone's ultimate fate... er, helping to fairly judge the winners.

Anthony Lucas

Anthony Lucas’s short films have been in competition at Cannes, BAFTA®, Oscars®, Annecy and with his production company, 3D Films, he has animated numerous TV commercials, children’s television and a station identity series for SBS television. His silhouette animated short film, The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello was nominated for an Oscar® at the 2005 Academy Awards and also nominated for a BAFTA that same year.

Jasper Morello received numerous awards locally and internationally, including the prestigious Annecy Film Festival where it won the Grand Prix, the first time for an Australian film. The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello uses a unique style of animation Anthony affectionately calls the ‘Shadowlands’ – “a silhouette world of gothic horror, of spindly figures dwarfed by bleak landscapes and Jules Verne machines”.

Anthony’s short films have twice been in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Holding Your Breath, an animated short written by Melbourne poet, Stuart Page, was accepted in 2002. His first live action short My Rabit Hoppy was selected for competition at Cannes this year.

Anthony has also worked as a 3rd Unit Director on the Warner Bros. features Queen of the Damned for director Michael Rymer and on Where The Wild Things Are for director Spike Jonze.

Anthony is currently developing an animated feature script set in the silhouette world of Jasper Morello and a live-action kids film about a frog from another dimension. Both are co-written with Mark Shirrefs who wrote the script for Jasper Morello.

Grzegorz Jonkajtys

Grzegorz was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1972.
He graduated from Academy of Fine Arts, in Warsaw in 1995. He has been working for the advertisement, animation and feature film industry for over 12 years.

While working in Poland (at Platige Image) and USA (Digital Kitchen, CafeFX, Syndicate, Industrial Light and Magic), Grzegorz has contributed as vfx artist and animation lead for such films as Sin City, HellBoy, Blade III, Pan's Labyrinth, Mist, Happening and Fallen Art, among others.

"He is best known for writing and directing his second film "ARK", for which he was nominated to Golden Palm at Cannes film festival in 2007. He also won the Siggraph Electronic Theater "Best of Show" award in the same year.

In 2008, Grzegorz created a short animated film "Legacy" which won the individual prize in the Uplift Universe - CGchallenge competition.

Grzegorz lives in San Francisco and works for ILM.

    Simon Dominic

    Born London, Living in North of England, age 40
    Hobbyist artist. Started dabbling in digital artwork about 4 years ago, never done anything arty before that.

    Not taking commissions yet, still working on improving, but hope to go freelance at some point. Been published in a few books (e.g. Painter, Expose 4 & 6, Fantasy Art Now) and mags (e.g. Corel Painter, Imagine FX, 2Dartist, Art Scene International) + Painter X packaging & promotion. That’s kind of it, really :)

    Brom has always considered himself a storyteller, whether with pictures or words. In fact, he is a painter of anything that is nasty and bites.

    For 20 years his work has featured in books, games, and film. His paintings are collected in two art books ‘Darkwerks’ and ‘Offerings’. “My heart and soul are going into my illustrated novels,” he says, “and my goal has always been to combine the two. A complete artistic vision. So I am both writing and illustrating them.” Brom recently published "The Plucker", a wicked children's book for adults.

    He has also finished up his second illustrated novel "The Devil's Rose". Basically a Western set in Hell. This will be coming out this summer. The latest news is that there is word of a movie deal in the works.

    Justin 'Coro' Kaufman has worked on literally hundreds of titles in his career as an Art Director and Concept Artist.

    He spent his youth 'running around with spray cans' in El Paso Texas until the idea cam to him to go to San Francisco and learn about his vices and finally turn them into a career. He spent four years at Shaba Games cutting his teeth in the industry he knew he had a talent for. He did Concepts, modeling, lighting and texturing.

    Coro took up an idea to start Massive Black with Andrew Jones and Jason Manley and currently works there as a concept artist and art director. He regularly paints for exhibitions and tours with the company.

    Phil Straub

    Philip Straub has been working as an illustrator/concept artist in the entertainment industry for over 15 years working most recently as ArtDirector for Electronic Arts. Philip is represented by numerous galleries in the United States and has a business licensing designs for fabrics, wallpapers and home decor products.

    He has been a featured artist in publications including; The Society of Illustrators NY and Los Angeles Annuals, Spectrum Fantasy Annuals, EXPOSE, and contributed to the d'artiste Digital Painting Master Class publication. Some of Philip's clients include: John Wiley and Sons, Fantasy Magazine, Universal Studios, Fisher Price, Mattel and Nickelodeon. Currently, Philip is working on completing Utherworlds, an original illustrated novel featuring over 60 illustrations and written in two languages.

    Brajan Martinovic

    Brajan lives in Croatia. His interest in computer graphics grew from playing with old Deluxe Paint when he was a kid. After seeing Jurassic Park he was blown away and wanted to learn to make effects like those.

    Unfortunately he was too young back then to comprehend what 3d meant, but years later he started learning it. He is still learning but loves it.

    His very first job was drawing illustrations and comics for a school magazine
    when in elementary school. As such it was a good intro to real jobs as he had to
    change his style a lot to fit that particular brief blood and no heavily deformed

    When he finished fine arts highschool he decided to avoid further art education
    and try to work. So he worked in advertising for 3 years until he felt it was time to move on, his dream being to work on big projects like LOTR or Star Wars. Curently he is animating and modeling game characters and doing some freelance.

    Brajan's personal projects are developing slowly due to lack of free time. Right now he is expanding the story for his Uplift video,'s shaping into something a lot bigger than he had in mind so maybe he will do a rendered comic with animated key parts, with sound this time of course!

    Mark Snoswell

    Dr Mark Snoswell is President of The CGSociety, Co-Publisher & Art Director of Ballistic Media and founder of Ballistic Media. Mark keeps a fairly low public profile choosing to work behind the scenes. Mark has been a major contributor to recent CGChallenges writing much of the inspirational and technical support material.

    His diverse range of experiences include: development of Absolute Character Tools (; development of The Ultimate Human Model set; film production work for Disney and Warner Brothers; production work for National Geographic; and teaching graphic design, 3ds Max and Painter. Mark’s background also includes multimedia design and a career in biotechnology R&D. He is also an artist when time permits and a sampling of his art can be seen in his

    Kerry Shea

    Kerry Shea joined The Jim Henson Company in 2006 after 16 years in film production management in live-action, visual effects, motion capture and both CG and traditional animation.

    With the animatronics and visual effects teams of Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Shea develops solutions to production challenges that best serve each project creatively.

    Shea has been instrumental in streamlining the Henson Digital Puppetry Studio, a proprietary technology where performers puppeteer and voice multiple digital characters on a three-camera virtual set with real time pre-visualization. Shea currently oversees digital production for Sid the Science Kid, a new digital puppetry series for PBS.

    Leigh A. van der Byl

    Leigh has been working in the visual effects industry for almost nine years. Starting in her native city of Cape Town, South Africa in 2000, she worked as a CG generalist in VFX for television commercials, music videos and documentaries for over four years, before moving to America and the feature film VFX industry where she worked as a texture painter, and occasionally as a lighting artist and modeler, on numerous features, including The Aviator, Sin City, Fantastic Four, Snakes on a Plane and the critically acclaimed art film, The Pan's Labyrinth.

    She moved to England in 2006, and has worked at a number of London's high profile film VFX shops, painting textures for films including Stardust, Underdog, and VFX Oscar winner The Golden Compass, in addition to upcoming epic feature Australia, and Framestore's anticipated animated adventure, The Tale of Despereaux. She is currently working on several productions at The Moving Picture Company.

    Somehow she also finds the time to regularly contribute articles to 3D World Magazine, play too much XBox, study for a degree in ancient history and archaeology, and admin the forums on CGTalk, where she can often be found adding to her postcount, which currently reads like a population statistic of a small city.

    Anton Fletcher

    Anton has done a bit of everything related to computers. Starting out selling and fixing hardware, he has spent time building billing systems for ISPs, doing quality assurance on Rag Doll Kung Fu, until finally ending up at CGCharacter as an animator.

    His skills in scripting led to a move to Ballistic Media where he now works as a developer, having put together large portions of CGPortfolio, CGWiki and CGJobs, as well as keeping tabs on the community as a whole.

    In his free time, he tries in vain to work on developing his game, but usually gets far too distracted by his XBox, stuffed moose collection, and other shiny new gadgets.
