Your Mission

Your challenge is to conceive and create an image that could potentially become part of future history as one of those iconic spectacular images that grasps viewers by the throat; that quickens the pulse; that excites and scares at the same time.

What makes something Spectacular? That's a good question. It's also the key to fame and fortune if you can learn how to turn out truly spectacular images on demand. The reason is that spectacular images are some of the most widely sought after and most commercially valuable. It's part of the human nature to be entertained by the spectacular.

First and foremost, submitted images will be judged on the strength of their emotive and narrative elements, with technical excellence as secondary criteria. The depth of feeling and the power of the relationship as portrayed by the image is the primary goal of this challenge. Participating artists must demonstrate clarity of thought and emotion in their finished images.

Artists are encouraged to think beyond traditional or conventional interpretations of the theme. Flex your imaginations and show us something original! Each challenger should provide an accompanying written description of their scene, explaining the emotions of the characters portrayed. The composition, body language, lighting, environment, atmosphere and facial expressions in the image itself should also be thoughtfully crafted to tell a powerful story that reaches out to the viewer.

Guidelines and Tips

  • The key theme of this challenge is the portrayal of something that is truly a spectacle - something both extraordinary, but within the realm of possibility. A once in a lifetime event.
  • Be creative and imaginative
  • Be original. Think beyond conventional imagery.

How the Challenge will be Run

This challenge will be a WIP (Work in Progress) Challenge to ensure everyone can learn from each other, offer feedback and critiques each challenger is required to submit Work In Progress (WIP) images, from the initial concept sketch (for both 2D and 3D entries) to wire frame models, texturing in progress continuing to the final render (for 3D) and final colored piece (for 2D).

  1. Enter the Challenge by registering yourself.
  2. Submit your work in progress images on a regular basis.
  3. Participate in the Community by critiquing other challenger's works in the respective forums.
  4. Submit your final entry before the end of the challenge. (Avoid the last minute rush - get your entry in early)
  5. Submit work in progress images, obtain feedback and give feedback to other challengers in the WIP challenge. (Note: Failure to do so may result in penalties during final judging. Community interaction is a must!)
  6. All winners are required to write 'making of' articles accompanied with high resolution work-in-progress stills, to be eligible for prizes. (This is a requirement of the Work-In-Progress challenge.)


Each challenger is required to submit images for the following milestones:

For 3D Stills:
Concept Sketch - JPG (online)
Modeling - JPG (online)
Texturing - JPG (online)
Lighting and Rendering - JPG (online)
Post Effects and Compositing, JPG (online)

AND print resolution TIF (FTP)

For 2D Illustrations:

All submissions must be in JPG format. The final image must be in both JPG, and TIF format (at a print-resolution of no less than TIF 300dpi).

Final Image Size

Your final image dimensions should be in print resolution (as large as you can possibly render). Do not send in a low-resolution placeholder and ask us to get back to you, as we won't.

  • A guideline is 2657 pixels wide and/or 3636 high, 300 DPI (portrait), or 3636 pixels wide and/or 2657 pixels high, 300 DPI (landscape). Your image aspect ratio and layout will dictate the final resolution. These are given as guidelines. To be safe, render images that are larger than these specified.
  • DO NOT upsample your images to achieve higher resolution. If you cannot reach the desired full-page resolution, just send in what you have.

Information about the final file submission will be emailed to all contestants in the last month of the challenge.


  1. All CGTalk members may enter the CG Challenge. Membership is free of charge.
  2. Employees of sponsors cannot enter this challenge.
  3. Pre-fabricated models cannot be used. Specifically, Challengers may not use Poser, Facegen or similar softwares. Terrain and foliage generation software such as Vue, Xfrog and Bionatics is allowed.
  4. You can enter the two categories simultaneously, but you cannot enter images with the same concept/subject matter in both. Each must be a distinctly different piece.
  5. Any image deemed to be the same or similar to one currently published will be disqualified for reasons of copyright liability.
  6. Any imaging deemed to contain content that depicts explicit acts that are overtly violent, sexual, cruel or brutal will be disqualified.
  7. The Challenge runs 04 September 2005 - 06 December 2005. No late entries will be accepted.

Terms and Conditions for Artists

  1. The sponsors of this Challenge may use short-listed and winning artwork for marketing purposes in the context of the Challenge, and agree to clearly credit the artist if any such artwork is used.
  2. To be eligible for prizes, all winning contestants must provide detailed Making Of's for the CG Challenge publication.
  3. CGNetworks may use submitted artwork in its Challenge books to document the contest.
  4. All artists will be contacted prior to any hard copy publishing for final image approval.
  5. No artwork will be used in any media without clear credit being given to the artist.
  6. No artwork will knowingly be sold, in whole or in part, by the sponsors outside of the context of the Challenge.
  7. No artwork will be used outside the challenge without the artist's prior consent.
  8. Artists may to use the images created for personal promotion. e.g. submission for EXPOSE' and other galleries.

If you do not agree with any of the above terms and conditions, please do not enter the CG Challenge. The rules have worked well throughout previous Challenges and have been accepted by thousands of artists who participate, collaborate and share the publicity gained from the CG Challenges.


Final submission of print-resolution artwork is to be done using FTP. If you are not familiar with FTP and how to use it, you should seek help on its use well prior to the close of the challenge - late submissions due to inexperience with FTP will not be accepted.
